Approach to mathematics in textbooks at tertiary level – exploring authors’ views about their texts

The aim of this article is to present and discuss some results from an inquiry into mathematics textbooks authors’ visions about their texts and approaches they choose when new concepts are introduced. Authors’ responses are discussed in relation to results about students’ difficulties with approaching calculus reported by previous research. A questionnaire has been designed and sent to seven authors of the most used calculus textbooks in Norway and four authors have responded. The responses show that the authors mainly view teaching in terms of transmission so they focus mainly on getting the mathematical content correct and ‘clear’. Vienaudžu atgriezeniskās saites izmantošana lietišķās sarakstes mācīšanā augstskolā

Tā kā rakstu valodas pilnveide ir aktuāla tēma augstskolā, bija svarīgi uzzināt par vienaudžu atgriezeniskās saites īstenošanas efektivitāti darījumu vēstuļu apguvē. Uzmanība tika pievērsta lietišķai sarakstei angļu valodā, jo šim žanram ir svarīga loma cilvēku profesionālajā un ikdienas dzīvē. Lai sasniegtu izvirzīto mērķi, gadījuma izpēte tika izmantota kā galvenā pētniecības metode. Pētniecības dati tika iegūti ar pirms- un pēcaptaujām, pirms- un pēctestiem, ieskaitot kvalitatīvo un kvantitatīvo paraugu analīzes. Šabloniskās valodas lietojums lietišķajā komunikācijā palīdz ziņu padarīt īsāku un skaidrāku, kas ir svarīgi, lai panāktu veiksmīgas biznesa attiecības un sasniegtu komunikatīvos mērķus. Mērķis bija izpētīt, cik efektīvi būtu piemērot leksisko pieeju mācot vēstuļu rakstīšanu lietišķās angļu valodas kontekstā. Pielietotā pētniecības metode bija gadījuma izpēte. Datu iegušanas metodes bija aptaujas un testi. Pētījuma dalībnieki bija trīsdesmit pilna laika bakalaura līmeņa studenti, kas apguva programmu vienā no universitātēm Latvijā. Distance learning introduced in almost all educational establishments in spring 2020 has raised interest among researchers how to deal with it in a more productive way. Thus, the goal of the research was to find out undergraduates’ views on distance learning of English grammar and the use of online revision materials in developing students’ independent study skills at a tertiary institution in Latvia. the research tool was a questionnaire consisting of open-ended and closed questions. Teaching speaking is an essential aspect of developing students’ sociolinguistic competence in a foreign language at any level. English studies at the tertiary level offer a variety of courses for practicing speaking and helping students reach the C1 and C2 level in BA and MA studies, respectively.
